This year the new class of the Master’s programme «Music and Scene in Transformation» is presenting itself under the theme «The Ship of Fools».
In a polyphonic workshop, students from the Basel Academy of Music are collaborating with dancer and choreographer Yotam Peled, musician and visual artist Nicolas Fehr, and Raphael Sbrzesny to create a performance at the Gare du Nord.
Themes such as temporary communities and the coexistence of the «other» are woven into the collectively developed composition and performance. A ship full of fools, dreamers, artists, philosophers and musicians sets sail. Off to new shores. The foundation is a musical backing track loosely based on Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s pluralistic compositional practice and his concept of the «spherical form of time». Composed from the students’ musical and biographical material, it reflects the entire class in all its polyphonic diversity.
Dance workshops, improvisation, research and performance are all part of the creative process. The week’s collaborative work culminates in a public showing at the Gare du Nord.
