Sonic Boom – OCIO

As part of the «Sonic Boom» artist-in-residence programme, eight artists and ensembles specialising in contemporary and experimental music are given the opportunity to realise their own concert formats, sound performances and music theatre productions. Over a period of two years, they will each design and present two evenings in which they can express their individual artistic approaches. Accompanied by an in-house discussion series and mentoring programme, the series provides a space for exchange between the audience, the scene and the artists.
«OCIO» envisions a near future in which artificial intelligence has replaced the human workforce and former workers are condemned to an endless vacation. To avert an impending social crisis, governments entrust political and economic decisions to an artificial oracle. Its solution is as rational as it is absurd: The diamond-covered exoplanet 55 Cancri e is to be exploited to make everyone on Earth rich. But the promise of boundless prosperity turns into a dystopia. Markets collapse, devastation spreads, and Earth transforms into a gigantic open-air jewelry store: dazzling, hot, and hostile to life.
In the midst of this world, two former office workers wander across beaches of glittering trash. They try to remember what longing feels like and why the new once mattered. As if in an endless video game, they go through a series of trials that increasingly force them to confront themselves.
«OCIO» is a musical theater piece about freedom, excess, and the future.
